Two Practical Legal Training Student Scholarship recipients for 2024

FLPA and the College of Law are proud to announce the two worthy recipients of the 2024 Practical Legal Training (PLT) Student Scholarships – metropolitan recipient Sophie Tennent and the very first regional recipient Taylah Lamont.

The two scholarships each comprise half-funded course tuition for PLT at the College of Law, a PLT placement and mentorship with a FLPA member law firm, and a $500 cash prize.

Now in its fourth year, the annual scholarships are for students intending to practise in family law.

Both recipients were immensely proud and thankful to have received the scholarship and support, not only for the financial support it provides but also for the invaluable guidance and mentorship they will receive from leading family lawyers.

Taylah Lamont was fortunate to have her scholarship award presented at FLPA’s recent Christmas function in Townsville with both the Honourable Justice Brasch KC and his Honour Judge Bowrey OAM in attendance, who both congratulated her.

Sophie Tennent was presented her scholarship at the College of Law by Executive Director – Queensland Ann-Maree David and FLPA’s immediate past president Rebecca Horsley.

Congratulations to both Sophie and Taylah on your wonderful achievements and we look forward to seeing your respective careers take off.

Sophie Tennent – Metropolitan recipient
Sophie said she was looking forward to undertaking her placement with a member of FLPA and developing her skills and abilities as a lawyer.

“This scholarship will help me gain invaluable experience, expertise and connections that I would otherwise be unlikely to possess until much later in my career and will help ease the financial burden of undertaking practical legal training,” Sophie said.

Taylah Lamont – Regional recipient
Taylah said as a regional student, she felt the award meant more to her, as a regional student.

“We often see opportunities for scholarships advertised and are deterred because usually the winners are from down south. To be awarded a scholarship regionally is a great opportunity which will hopefully see more students from non-metro area get involved and apply,” Taylah said.
